With the Prices on USB Flash Drives rapidly decreasing in exact Proportion to the size of the drive, quick, painless, safe and secure backups are within everybody’s grasp. There is no longer any excuse not to have a backup of your data.

With a 4GB USB Drive going for about $45.00 you should be able to plug one of these into your USB port and copy the contents of “My Documents” right over there. If you have more than 4GB’s worth of data then you probably need to archive some or, buy an 8GB Drive? – Just a suggestion!

Even better would be to write a small backup script such as:

xcopy “c:\documents and settings\username\my documents\*.* /d /e /c /y f:\

and save it to a file like c:\backup.cmd. Then, place a shortcut to this file on your Desktop and Double Click it whenever you need to freshen up your backed up copy of “My Documents” to your USB Flash Drive.

The Switches above /d /e /y /c tell the xcopy command to back up only files since the last backup, and all subdirectories and don’t stop on errors and don’t wait for a YES confirmation from me to overwrite an older file. The f:\ assumes your USB Flash Drive has taken the Drive letter f: (Change Drive Letter accordingly)
