Archive for the Vista Category

So you’re thinking of buying Vista huh? And you’d like another opinion or three? Well, Here’s what I think about Vista….

First, just so you know, I’ve been playing with computers and servers for home and business for over 25 years. I’ve watched Software Operating Systems and Applications improve and get worse and come and go… and deliver promises that aren’t kept, that are understated and undersold and some that, in my opinion, are a total waste of time and money - yes, we’ll be talking more about “security suites” later.

Back to Vista. I think there are two types of user who are really going to reap the full benefits of Microsoft’s Vista operating system. One is the IT Support department within a medium to large business or enterprise. Even tho’ they have a lot of money invested in older - XP, 2000 and NT - operating systems they would be - imprudent - not to consider the great security aspects of using the Microsoft’s Vista Platform within the corporate environment. The ease of rollout and the decrease in help desk calls would be attractive!

The second type of user who, I feel, would benefit from Windows Vista is the user who needs be protected from themselves. The User Account control which, in essence, prevents you from having “full administrative rights” without process confirmation is a good thing for overly adventurous and “creative” users. It lessens the frequency of “bad” mistakes being made.

Having said that I believe there to be a strong and valid argument for the rest of us to buy XP still. It’s cheaper, our exisiting soft and hardware work with it and it’s the devil we know and stable too!

Myself, I’ve turned off the widget bar and user account control on Vista. I made sure it was a virgin install on a new hard drive and it really is productive now - just like when I was using XP.

If you want to save yourself some time, money and frustration over the next couple of years or more - stick with XP.
